LIST YOUR NETWORKING OPTIONS

 

There are so many resources that can be utilized when networking. One method is to Plant Your Seeds as we learned in the Networking Techniquessection. However, if you’d like to be more methodical, consider creating a list of organisations and foundations that are specifically targeted to your goal.

STEP ONE

The best way to start is to find a whiteboard or piece of paper and jot down all the different places you could find leads.

  • School clubs
  • Facebook groups
  • LinkedIn groups
  • Networking clubs
  • Entrepreneurship clubs
  • Organisations from the kommun (Almi, Science Park, Nyföretagarecentrum)
  • Job searching organisations (Kompis Sverige, Working for Change, Mitt Liv)

Friends, colleagues, acquaintances

Your notes:

  • Facebook groups: Lediga Lägenheter i Stockholm
  • Blocket
  • Expats meetup group
  • Friends who are planning to move this year: Asad, Nima, Stefan

STEP TWO

Create an excel list to keep track of all the different ideas you came up with and all the new ones you’ll come across in the future. Try to record the name of the organization, short description of what they do, a link to their website, and a possible contact person if you have one).

​​BONUS EXERCISE:

Use your results from Make it Work For You in the previous section on how to find a job if you don’t yet know Swedish.

STEPS:

  1. Make a list of your strengths – something that gives you a competitive advantage:
    • Special skill or knowledge in your industry
    • Native English 
    • A second or third language (i.e. translations)
    • Experience at respected or recognizable companies
    • Anything you’re proud of that can be an asset to a company
  2. Make a list of about 10-20 companies that are probably open to hiring someone who doesn’t speak Swedish:
    • International and diverse employees
    • Large international companies (ex: Volvo)
    • Startups
    • Companies who have a client base in your home country
  3. Make a list of recruiting companies you can contact or register with a:
    • Focus on hiring people with your specialty knowledge area
    • Focus on hiring international talent (ex: Undutchables)
