The year 2020 was quite a hard year for all of us with the corona situation. But we will keep our heads high to welcome the new year. A new year usually means new resolutions. Some people will try to be healthier by doing more exercises or eating less junk food and some will probably try to have wiser financial management. It can be anything depending on the priority of each person.
Last year when I shopped online, I noticed when I clicked the “filter” button, some company put the word “sustainability label” or “conscious” as one of the options. Thus I looked for explanations about it and found out that it meant their products were produced with care to the environment and the people who were involved in the production. So when the customers choosing that option, it meant that they are sustainable-conscious buyers.
I also received some questionnaires asking for my feedback. They wanted our opinions on how we think and feel about some of their sustainable initiatives, for example, their packaging materials and whether we prefer to buy products from ecological raw materials. They wanted to know whether we appreciate their efforts in making the world better or whether we want to take part in the action and be part of the solutions.
So why not make this your alternatives to your new year resolution? You may take part in it. It can be anything. It can be the clothes that you wear, the food that you eat, the way you travel, type of car you have and many others.
But how can you tell whether a product or the company is doing sustainable initiatives?
Sustainability covers the environmental, social, quality and safety aspects. This is usually proven by certification logos.
When you do shopping you may want to take a look at the packaging. Each product has a different kind of logos depending on the industry and the country they are produced or sold. Some logos apply for international sustainable standards and some apply for regional or national. For instance, if you buy paper, it usually has FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) logo. If you buy fish or seafood, you may see that it has MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) logo. Both of them are a type of international certification standards.
So if you can find logos in your products, it means the company is one step ahead in sustainability and be glad that you can be part of it.
Check out the company website
Sustainability in a company can be done only if the top management or the owner are involved in the process and decision making. Thus, a company who is serious about doing sustainability initiatives usually put sustainability as part of its mission and vision.
Sustainability is a positive thing to promote. You may see that the company has a special section on their websites explaining their sustainability efforts. Where the products came from. How did they produce their products? Who are the people or organizations that they are engaged to make these come true?
All of these efforts are usually summarized in their sustainability report. Some companies will also actively communicate their sustainability efforts for example in their commercials on TV or in a magazine or during a press conference.
Are these claims true?
But you may wonder whether the things that they had said or written about are all true. Well, as you may have heard, the truth will eventually come out. You will know if some companies are only making greenwash campaign.
Greenwash campaign means that a company makes false claims that they are sustainable for promotional causes only – when in fact they are not. In the sustainable world, usually, there are organizations who are watching how they are doing things. These organizations will usually report them or write about them.
So what are you waiting for? Buying sustainable products means you are supporting the cause. It’s one of many positive alternatives to do in these hard times don’t you think? As I always believe, life laid out many options for you. It is you who decide.
Let us welcome the new year with many positive things that can make an impact on a better future.
