Is Sweden the best country to have children, be a citizen and live an environmentally friendly life? Sweden is ranked highest in several areas according to a study made by the US News & World Report. The report presented at the summit in Davos, Switzerland, ranks Sweden in fifth place and is based on responses from 16,000 people around the world.
Dagens Nyheter – the Swedish daily newspaper writes about this report that shines a very positive light on Sweden. However, a closer look reveals that Sweden is the most child-friendly country in the world, that civil rights are the strongest, and it is easiest to live environmentally friendly here.
Yet, the study is mainly based on other peoples view on Sweden, so it is more a study in how well Swedes have been in promoting their own country, rather than perhaps a scientific review of Sweden as a country.
This is a reflection of other people’s image of Sweden, the rankings show above all that we have managed to present our country in sustainable terms, says Karin Bradley, associate professor in the Department of Urban Planning and Environment.
Sweden is also, according to the report, the second best country to be a woman, has the second highest quality of life, the second best business environment and is the third most transparent country in the world.
