The Newbie Guide to Sweden

We explain Sweden

Which driving licenses are valid in Sweden?

Do you have a valid driving license in Sweden? All driving licenses issued within the European Economic Area, the EEA, are valid in Sweden as long as they are valid in the country where they were issued – not matter how long you stay in Sweden.

The EEA countries are: Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Croatia, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary and Austria.

If you have an EEA driving license, you may even be allowed to be a private driving tutor – handledare – if you – obviously – meet the necessary requirements.

Useful websites if you want a valid driving license in Sweden

The Swedish Transport Agency (Transportstyrelsen) and the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket), share the responsibilities for all traffic and driving related issues in Sweden. Körkortsportalen is their common webpage, with all kinds of information you may need about driving licenses.

  • Körkortsportalen – (the official driving license portal)
  • Transportstyrelsen – (the Swedish Transport Agency)
  • Trafikverket –  (the Swedish Transport Administration)

Note: Körkortsportalen – the official driving license portal has most its information in Swedish. However on the page we send you, you find downloadable brochures in many languages.

Here is a useful guide to Swedish parking signs.
